What are you Doing? By Gene McGuire (Sunday, July 15, 2007)
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22)
COMMENT: It seems as if taking polls has taken on a life of its own. Every time you look around someone else has taken a survey about something. We have polls about the President’s popularity, how many married women would not marry their mates if they had it to do all over again and I know of at least one TV network that will present several news items and ask you to use the Internet to choose which of them you want presented. Recently Gallop made a survey that really interested me; the headline was: “Spiritual state of union found strong”. I was anxious to read the article to find out what country the article was referring to. Low and behold, they were talking about The United States of America! Here’s a little bit of the findings. “Believers are many: 82 percent of the respondents believe in God, while 13 percent believe in a “universal spirit or higher power”. Three-quarters say they are Christian.” I scratched my head after reading that. How can that be when the sin in this Country is reaching astronomical proportions? Let’s look at just one segment of our society. “Out-of-wedlock births rose to 37 percent in the united States in 2005, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. That is a five-decade-old trend, dating back to 1960, when the out-of-wedlock birth rate was 5.3 percent in the United States.” I don’t know why I was shocked about the difference between the results of that “spiritual survey” and the reality that exists in our Country. James made it perfectly clear when He said “You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe–and tremble.” (James 2:19) In John 3:16 a person who believes in Jesus trusts in, clings to and relies on Jesus. I have a WISE SAYING regarding that spiritual survey and the reality of life in America today:
THE PROOF OF THE PUDDING IS IN THE EATING!!!
SCRIPTURE STUDY: Deut. 4:9, James 2:17-21
WISE SAYING: AMERICA IS GREAT BECAUSE SHE IS GOOD. AND IF AMERICA EVER CEASES TO BE GOOD, SHE WILL CEASE TO BE GREAT. (Author is unknown. It was mistakenly attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville)
