Cartoonist’s Comment: A water skier has no power to ski without the boat. And so we as Christians have no power in ourselves, it comes from our connection to Jesus and His Anointing

Slow Down! by Gene McGuire (Thursday, February 14, 2008)

“Now all these things befell them by way of a figure [as an example and warning to us]; they were written to admonish and fit us for right action by good instruction. . . .” (1 Corinthians 10:11 Amp. Bible)

COMMENT: I know you have had the following experiences while driving on
the highway. In the distance you see flashing lights that seem to be emanating from a police car. As you get closer, your suspicions are confirmed; a policeman has stopped a passenger car. What happens to the group of cars that are traveling along with you? You are right! You all slow down to the posted speed limit. The group has decided to learn from the experience of that unfortunate driver. Our Lead Scripture exhorts us to learn from the experiences the Israelites had in the wilderness. Briefly stated, they became idolaters, committed sexual immorality, tempted Christ and murmured against God. They paid dearly for their iniquities. It sounds like a good idea to include the Old Testament in your bible study. . . .doesn’t it?

SCRIPTURE STUDY: 1 Corinthians 10: 1-11

“And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.” (1 John 4:21)

COMMENT: Recently, I saw a report that mentioned the invention of a camera that can make an individual seem much thinner there he/she really is. I don’t know whether or not that kind of camera was used for a recent picture of Catie Couric, the new news anchor on CBS TV. Later, they showed the “thin” picture along side of the “real” picture and there was an appreciable difference. Often we see ourselves through the “distorted lens” of our minds. For instance, we may think that we have a lot of love and compassion, but unless we are interacting with other brothers and sisters who – like ourselves – are not perfect, we are probably fooling ourselves. In fact, loving some of us is a very difficult task. We can’t grow spiritually in a vacuum; that is one of the great values of having the small group as an integral part of the church. That’s where real fellowshipping can take place. Let’s strive to see ourselves as we really are by placing ourselves in that kind of environment.

“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:6)

COMMENT: My goodness! One of these day I will allow the Holy Spirit to direct my entire life. Well, let me clue you into the situation. Each week I take a week’s worth of the “Thought for Today” messages and send them to about 30 inmates. In return, I often receive letters from them. Two weeks ago a young lady sent me a big envelope. In it there was a letter for me but also a letter in a stamped and addressed envelope to be sent to another inmate at another correctional facility. Without giving it a second thought, I mailed it. A week later I received a duplication. This time I paused a moment to consider what I had done. It would be one thing if the inmate needed me to supply postage, but that wasn’t the case. Evidently it must be against the rules for her to correspond with other incarcerated individual. What kind of Christian example am I displaying by getting into cahoots with her to break the rules of the jail? We children of God need to continually apply the Word of God to all of our activities.
